Peter Korn: Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman

Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman

Description

In this moving account (and favorite of America's most famous woodworker, Nick Offerman), Peter Korn explores the nature and rewards of creative practice. We follow his search for meaning as an Ivy-educated child of the middle class who finds employment as a novice carpenter on Nantucket, transitions to self-employment as a designer/maker of fine furniture, takes a turn at teaching, and finally founds a school in Maine. Through this beautiful exploration, Korn works to get at the "why" of craft, in particular, and at the satisfactions of creative work, in general - to understand their essential nature. What is it about craft and creative work that makes them so rewarding? What are the natures of those rewards? How do the products of creative work inform society? In short, what does the process of making things reveal about ourselves? Korn draws on forty years of hands-on experience to answer these questions eloquently in this personal and revealing inquiry.

. Settle comfortably in one home or two From malfunctioning monsters to tenacious terrorists, Shirow Masamune brings you the world of Appleseed. See the book that has inspired generations and defined the cyberpunk genre. Then he made "The Apprentice." Has your child learned their ABCs? Far Beyond ABC Activity Book is packed full of fun activities and puzzles, helping your child to confidently tackle and enjoy hundreds of new words. It also also comes with 50 reusable stickers that your child can use time and time again! This latest book from the Basher Science series investigates the unseen world of microbes. Basher's distinctive style presents key microbes as characters with their own voice and personality. Microbiology investigates the "teensy tykes" such as algae and bacteria that are all around us in the living world, as well as a range of so-called "minibeasts," but these are not the usual creepy-crawlies Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman free ebook that you might think of. Jo Nardolillo: Violin Secrets: 101 Strategies for the Advanced Violinist

Violin Secrets: 101 Strategies for the Advanced Violinist

Description

In Violin Secrets: 101 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Violinist, author and violinist Jo Nardolillo surveys the cutting edge of current violin technique, combining tradition and innovation in one volume. Blending traditional strategies that have produced generations of legendary performers with modern ideas, Nardolillo reveals the secrets of today's most sought-after master teachers, garnered through her decade of study at top conservatories across the nation. With more than a quarter century of experience teaching at the advanced level, she has refined and distilled these essential concepts into clear, concise, step-by-step instructions, complete with original illustrations and helpful tips. Violin Secrets is an indispensable resource for any and all serious violinists. The first chapter tackles the toughest challenge on the wish list of every established professional, dedicated student, and passionate amateur: understanding why immaculate intonation is so difficult (and exploring ways to achieve it). Further chapters address the advanced techniques of fingerboard mapping, mastering spiccato, controlling vibrato, playing into the curve, small-hand technique, and navigating comfortably in high positions. An extensive section on practice strategies blends concepts from learning theory, sports psychology, and Zen, and the chapter on artistry offers insight on creating expressive phrases, connecting with the audience, and developing a unique artistic voice. Violin Secrets examines overcoming performance anxiety, choosing the right music editions, being a strong section player in an orchestra, leading productive chamber music rehearsals, and winning auditions. Violin Secrets is beautifully illustrated with original drawings by T. M. Larsen, musical examples from the standard literature, and a violinist's family tree that traces these secrets back through to the founding fathers of violin technique. The Music Secrets for the Advanced Musician series is designed for instrumentalists, singers, conductors, composers, and other instructors and professionals seeking a quick set of pointers to improve their work as performers and producers of music. Easy to use and intended for the advanced musician, contributions to Music Secrets fill a niche for those who have moved beyond what beginners and intermediate practitioners need.

Sherman Tank Manual: An Insight into the History, Development, Production, Uses and Ownership of the World's Most Iconic Tank

Description

The US-designed and built Sherman was the most prolific Allied tank of the Second World War and was operated by the armies of the USA, Canada, Britain, the Soviet Union and France. Ease of production, mechanical reliability and durability in use characterised the Sherman, of which more than 49,000 were built. Acclaimed author Pat Ware tells the Sherman story from the differing viewpoints of its wartime crews and maintainers, and of modern-day restorers.

The New York Trilogy is perhaps the most astonishing work by one of America's most consistently astonishing writers. The Trilogy is three cleverly interconnected novels that exploit the elements of standard detective fiction and achieve a new genre that is all the more gripping for its starkness. It is a riveting work of detective fiction worthy of Raymond Chandler, and at the same time a profound and unsettling existentialist enquiry in the tradition of Kafka or Borges. In each story the search for clues leads to remarkable coincidences in the universe as the simple act of trailing a man ultimately becomes a startling investigation of what it means to be human. The New York Trilogy is the modern novel at its finest: a truly bold and arresting work Sherman Tank Manual: An Insight into the History, Development, Production, Uses and Ownership of the World's Most Iconic Tank free epub of fiction with something to transfix and astound every reader. "Marks a new departure for the American novel." (Observer). "A shatteringly clever piece of work...Utterly gripping, written with an acid sharpness that leaves an indelible dent in the back of the mind." (Sunday Telegraph). "The New York Trilogy established him as the only author one could compare to Samuel Beckett." (Guardian).

Fathers and Sons

Description

With an Introduction by Lionel Kelly, University of Reading. Translated by C.J. Hogarth. Fathers and Sons is one of the greatest nineteenth century Russian novels, and has long been acclaimed as Turgenev's finest work. It is a political novel set in a domestic context, with a universal theme, the generational divide between fathers and sons. Set in 1859 at the moment when the Russian autocratic state began to move hesitantly towards social and political reform, the novel explores the conflict between the liberal-minded fathers of Russian reformist sympathies and their free-thinking intellectual sons whose revolutionary ideology threatened the stability of the state. At its centre is Evgeny Bazorov, a strong-willed antagonist of all forms of social orthodoxy who proclaims himself a nihilist and believes in the need to overthrow all the institutions of the state. As the novel develops Bazarov's political ambitions become fatally meshed with emotional and private concerns, and his end is a tragic failure. The novel caused a bitter furore on its publication in 1862, and this, a year later, drove Turgenev from Russia.

This book suggests that, while there may be common features in the use of the word, 'spirituality' is not a single reality. Different 'spiritualities' reflect particular religious or philosophical viewpoints, as well as the cultural contexts in which they arise and develop. Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed provides students and general readers with a reliable and comprehensive guide to 'spirituality' as an area of study, religiously, historically, philosophically and in the social sciences. It explores the tools that are used to study the subject and to interpret spiritual classics (whether these are written texts or other forms such as art) from different times and cultures. Attention is paid to spirituality in a variety of religious and non-religious forms in their own terms and comparatively.

Masterclass in History Education: Transforming Teaching and Learning

Description

MasterClass in History Education draws on international research and practice to present effective and engaging approaches for history teachers who want to explore the ways in which reading, research and reflection can support the development of history teaching and learning in the classroom. At the heart of the book is a series of professional enquiries carried out by experienced history teachers, working in a range of contexts. Each history teacher addresses clear questions arising from their practice and together they illustrate various approaches to data collection, data analysis and argument. These history teachers also show how they drew on diverse scholarship in history and history education, including many publications by other history teachers. In eight further chapters, other experts, ranging from practitioner-scholars to researchers in diverse fields (such as history, history education, teacher education, teacher research and curriculum theory) reflect on the distinctive insights that these teachers offer and explore connections with their own fields. The combination of perspectives and the depth of knowledge of the varied contributors reveal the importance of different kinds of relationship between 'theory' and 'practice'. The links between classroom realities and research and the critical use of different kinds of text will support history teachers in developing their practice and professional voice.

Jodi Picoult: The Storyteller

The Storyteller

Description

Some stories live forever . . . Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can t. Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With the integrity of the closest friend she s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she s made about her life and her family. In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths to which we will go in order to keep the past from dictating the future."

Oh - did I mention that he is absolutely sex-on-a-stick gorgeous and he makes me feel things that I never ever wanted to feel for a Fae...every time he touches me or looks at me with those dangerous golden eyes he seems to pull me further in under his spell, despite my better judgment. My friends and I can't trust anyone and nothing is as it seems on the surface - not even me.
